Investing in Quality: Why Facility and Team Matter in Outdoor Living Construction
Homeowners often think about a new fence, a custom gate, or an outdoor living space. They usually focus on design, materials, and cost. But at Southwest Fence & Deck, we believe the strongest outdoor structures begin long before the first post is set in the ground. They begin inside our facility. With the people who show up every morning, committed to craftsmanship, integrity, and long-term value.
Our owner, Jamie Turrentine, has spent decades building not only quality outdoor structures but also the facility and team that make them possible. His philosophy is simple:
When you invest in your people and your process, you create products that last for generations.
Below, we take you inside the heart of that philosophy. We explain why the right facilities and team structure matter just as much as the work performed on site.

How Our Facility Drives Quality, Craftsmanship, and Long-Term Value
The foundation of our work begins at our facility. When Jamie purchased the building more than 30 years ago, it was a simple structure surrounded by open land. Over time, it became a full-scale operational center that supports craftsmanship and protects quality.
Every project starts here. Each morning, our crews check in, gather tools, review plans, and prepare for the day. This daily structure gives us a clear view of who is on the job. It also shows how equipment is maintained and what each team needs to perform their work effectively.
Jamie describes this daily rhythm well:
“When our employees meet at the building every morning, we know how their day is starting. That matters when you’re building something they’ll live with for decades.”
Our facility also houses a complete metal fabrication shop. We have several welding tables, a plasma cutter, and space for cutting steel beams. This setup helps us make custom parts that fit perfectly with the design and engineering of each project. This allows us to produce work that cannot be replicated by contractors who rely entirely on third-party fabricators. Nor can it be matched by those using off-the-shelf components.
We buy materials in bulk and select them carefully, which gives us control over quality and consistency. Because of the relationships we maintain with suppliers, we are often notified when special materials arrive. This gives our clients access to options that others may never see.
Safety and training also begin at the facility. On the first Wednesday of each month, our teams attend structured training sessions. These sessions reinforce safe practices and help keep job sites predictable and professional.
“Everyone thinks safety is common sense until something goes wrong. These meetings keep us focused,” Jamie shared.

What Our Facility Allows Us to Do
Our facility is the center of our operations and one of the most important elements in the quality we deliver. It gives us the ability to manage every detail of a project before it ever reaches a homeowner’s property.
By bringing our entire team, tools, materials, and fabrication capabilities under one roof, we can achieve a level of consistency and craftsmanship that would be impossible without a dedicated, well-organized space.
• Maintain consistency through daily structure
Every team member begins the day at the same location, reviewing plans, preparing equipment, and aligning with the goals for each project. This creates dependable quality in the field.
• Control material quality and custom fabrication
We select materials directly, store them properly, and fabricate metalwork in-house. This ensures each beam, panel, or welded component meets our standards before installation.
• Provide ongoing training and reinforce safety
Monthly training sessions at the facility help our crews stay focused, skilled, and aligned with best practices. Safety becomes part of the routine rather than an afterthought.
• Build a unified team culture
Working from a shared space encourages communication, accountability, and teamwork. It helps every employee understand that they are contributing to a larger craft and a shared reputation.
A Skilled, In-House Team That Treats Every Project Like Their Own
The heart of Southwest Fence & Deck is our people. Many of our employees have been with us for twenty or thirty years. Their experience and loyalty are not common in the industry. They have helped shape our standards and continue to pass down their skills to the next generation of builders.
New team members receive direct mentorship from those who have spent decades mastering their craft. This tradition ensures that our work maintains a consistent level of precision and artistry. It also creates a culture in which every crew member understands how their performance reflects on the entire company.
Jamie sees this sense of ownership every day:
“Our guys train the new ones. They teach them to build it the way they would. That final product reflects on them.”
This pride extends beyond construction. Clean job sites, respectful communication, thoughtful problem-solving, and attention to detail all reflect the values of a team that has grown together over decades. Many of our team members celebrate their completed projects by taking photos of them, not because they have to, but because they are proud of what they created.
Their work is more than labor. It reflects skill, commitment, and the belief that outdoor spaces should be built with both beauty and integrity.

Final Thoughts
At Southwest Fence & Deck, our work is built on years of investment in our facility and our people. These choices shape every outdoor structure we build.
Homeowners benefit from the consistency of an experienced team, the precision of in-house fabrication, and the safety and professionalism that come from a well-managed facility.
Quality is not an accident. It is the result of daily discipline, long-term investment, and a team that cares deeply about the work they do. When you choose us, you are choosing a company that has spent decades refining the systems and culture that bring exceptional outdoor spaces to life.
